One of the most spectacular town with Chumey, Choekar (West), Jakar and the Tang (East) Valleys around it and is also a center of Buddhism. Once many great Buddhist teachers meditated and left many sacred grounds. The Guru and his lineage of Tertons, treasure finders, have led to the sprouting of many temples in the valley. Visit the famous Kurjey, Jamby and Tamshing Lhakhangs. It is also the Jakar Dzong and the seat of the district administration. A new trekking route known as the Bumthang Owl Trek known due to the hooting of owls is quite common along this route. The trail will be a three-day hiking route which starts from Menchugang and ends at Jakar Dzong, The trek is also said to follow the traditional route (the Royal Heritage Trail) used by the Second King, between his summer and winter residences in Bumthang and Trongsa. Bumthang a tourist hot spot has four high valleys are covered in forests with monasteries, Chorten, traditional stone houses and colourful market displaying traditional textiles and crafts. The wood carvings, masks, gold - and silverworks, paper, and religious paintings are just brilliant.

To Reach : By Air

Bumthang to Thimpu is nearly 10 hours drive nearly 275 kilometers. Paro is nearly325 kilometers the only airport in Bhutan. Drukair is the national carrier, connecting Paro to Bangkok (Thailand), Dhaka (Bangladesh), Kolkatta, and Delhi (India) and Kathmandu (Nepal). During the monsoon season, flights are often delayed by cloud cover. The other Airport is Bagdogra. Wangdiphodrang to Phuentsholing is nearly 250 kilometers and nearly 8 - 9 hours drive. Phuentsholing to Bagdogra Airport (IXB) is 180 kilometers and 4 hours drive. Bagdogra is connected to Kolkata, Delhi, etc and other Indian cities by flight.

To Reach : By Rail

Bumthang to Phuentsholing is nearly 250 kilometers and nearly 8 - 9 hours drive. Phuentsholing to New Jalpaiguri Railway Station (NJP) is 180 kilometers and 4 hours drive. Bhutan has no railway system but it’s on the anvil. A proposed railway track will be laid with Indian Railways soon. The nearest major railway station is in New Jalpaiguri. Phuentsholing to Hashimara is nearly 18 kilometers and ½ hours drive. Banarhat and Hashimara are the closest railway stations but the frequency rate of train is less.

To Reach : By Road

Bumthang to Thimpu is nearly 10 hours drive, nearly 270 kilometers. Bumthang to Mongar is nearly 200 kilometers and is nearly 7 hours drive. Trongsa to Bumthang is nearly 70 kilometers and 2 ½ - 3 hours drive. Lateral Road starts in Phuentsholing on the Indian border and terminates in Trashigang in the Far East, with branches to other main centers such as Paro, Thimpu and Punakha. On the Indian side National Highway number 31 is close to Jaigaon / Phuentsholing. Buses for Bhutan either start or have a stoppage from Tenzing Norgay Bus Terminus in Siliguri. Bhutan Calcutta bus service is also quite popular.
