The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway(DHR), which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site saw a very good rise in both passenger numbers and revenue in the financial year 2025-26. DHR director Rishab Choudhary who is the director of DHR, said the heritage train carried over 2,15,432 passengers during the year, compare with 1,83,003 passengers in 2024-25. The railway also earned Rs 25.4 crore in 2025-26, up from Rs 22.1 crore in the previous financial year. DHR Director Rishab Choudhary said "DHR saw a growth of nearly 17.7% in passenger footfall and about 14.7% in earnings year on year highlighting the enduring popularity of the 'Toy Train' among domestic and international tourists alike. "
DHR officials said the rise was mainly due to several steps taken to make the journey more comfortable and enjoyable for passengers while keeping the railway’s old world charm intact. These steps include special tourism packages, customized services for travellers, better coordination among stakeholders and improvements in infrastructure and onboard facilities.
DHR Director Rishab Choudhary also said, the railway’s better performance has also helped the local economy in the Darjeeling hills. Many people whose livelihoods depend on tourism and related businesses have benefited from the increase in visitors. “We are committed to preserving the legacy of the historic railway while continuing to improve our services.”
