Goa Sees a Big Rise in Visitors

Goa is seeing more tourists every year. In 2025, over 1 crore domestic tourists and more than 5 lakh international tourists visited the state. This growth has continued in 2026 as well. In just the first seven months of 2026, Goa received more than 61 lakh visitors. The Goa government now wants to promote Goa as a place that people can visit throughout the year not just for its beaches but for Goa’s monsoon season, villages, heritage sites, culture, nature, rivers and local experiences.

According to the government, tourism plays a major role in Goa’s economy and contributes around 16.43 percent to the state’s GDP. Tourism also supports many other sectors, including hotels, restaurants, transport, travel services, shops, handicrafts and events. It also provides income to many local people. At the same time the government has also said that the growing number of tourists can put pressure on Goa’s infrastructure, natural resources and local communities. To deal with this, the government is promoting its “Goa Beyond Beaches” approach. The idea is to encourage tourists to visit the hinterland and other parts of the state instead of staying mainly in the traditional coastal tourist areas.

According to the government, Goa has also become the first state in India to adopt Regenerative Tourism. The aim is to promote tourism while also protecting the environment and supporting local communities. Goa’s tourism plans now focus on different types of tourism including nature and Eco-tourism, river and backwater tourism, heritage and culture, MICE tourism, adventure activities, leisure and entertainment, spiritual and wellness tourism, and sports tourism.

Tourism plays an important part in Goa’s economy. Many hotels, restaurants, taxi drivers, shops, travel companies and handicraft sellers depend on tourists for their income.
