From July 31st passengers with confirmed reserved train tickets can book excess luggage online while booking their tickets on the IRCTC website. Earlier, passengers carrying luggage beyond the free limit had to visit the railway parcel office at the station to fill out forms and wait in long queues to book their extra baggage. But now process becomes much easier. The online excess luggage booking option is available only for passengers with confirmed tickets and for travel classes where extra luggage is allowed by paying the required charges. During ticket booking passengers can declare if they are carrying luggage beyond the free limit. The system will also show important details such as the free luggage allowance for each travel class, the maximum weight allowed, restricted items, extra luggage charges, and penalty rules before the booking is completed.
Free and Maximum Luggage Limits
AC First Class (1AC) : Passengers can carry up to 70 kg for free. With excess luggage booking and they can carry up to 150 kg.
AC 2-Tier and First Class : The free luggage limit is 50 kg, while the maximum allowed with extra luggage booking is 100 kg.
Sleeper Class : Passengers can carry 40 kg free of charge and up to 80 kg by paying for excess luggage.
Second Class : The free luggage allowance is 35 kg, and the maximum limit with excess booking is 60 kg.
Passengers should note that AC 3-Tier and AC Chair Car do not allow excess luggage booking. The free luggage limit for both classes remains 40 kg.
Indian Railways has also fixed the maximum size of bags that passengers can carry inside train coaches.
AC 3-Tier, AC 3 Economy and AC Chair Car : Maximum bag size is 55 cm × 45 cm × 22.5 cm.
AC First Class, AC 2-Tier, Sleeper and General Class : Maximum bag size is 100 cm × 60 cm × 25 cm.
Passengers can track their luggage using the Track and Trace facility. They will also receive an SMS when their luggage reaches the destination station. To collect the parcel passengers must show the original Railway Receipt at the destination parcel delivery counter. This new facility will make travel more convenient as passengers carrying extra luggage will no longer have to complete the entire booking process at the parcel office.
How to Use the Online Service
1. Visit the Indian Railways Parcel Portal and choose the excess luggage option on the IRCTC platform while booking or after booking your ticket.
2. Enter your train number, journey details, and fill in the online forwarding form.
3. Print the e-forwarding note and take your luggage to the parcel office at the departure station for final weighing and payment of the applicable charges.
Passengers should remember that although the booking process starts online but they still need to visit the parcel office at the departure station to complete the weighing and payment before their luggage is accepted for transport.
