Ladakh is set to launch India’s first high-altitude wildlife safari. Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena has approved guided jeep safaris on snow leopard and birdwatching trails. The move aims to promote eco-tourism and encourage people to explore Ladakh’s wildlife in a responsible way. It will also involve local communities in protecting wildlife and help them benefit from tourism. The decision was taken at the first meeting of the newly formed Snow Leopard and High Altitude Nature (SHAN) Conservation Society, chaired by the Lieutenant Governor. Under the new plan, the forest department will start guided jeep safaris in Ladakh. The safaris will be similar to those in national parks like Kaziranga and Ranthambore. Special open back vehicles will be used for the safaris. Trained local drivers and guides will take visitors along the wildlife trails. The move is aimed at stopping illegal off-roading and reducing disturbance to wildlife. It will also give visitors a better experience through safe and eco friendly tourism.

The forest department has been asked to find suitable safari routes in Hemis National Park, Changthang and Karakoram wildlife sanctuaries. Areas such as Nubra, Zanskar, Sham, Kargil and Drass will also be considered because they are known for snow leopard sightings and a wide variety of birds. Under the plan, 20 local young people will be selected and trained in birdwatching and bird identification. They will also be provided with binoculars. Ten birdwatching hides will be built at important birdwatching spots.

Officials said Ladakh has the largest population of snow leopards in India. Out of an estimated 718 snow leopards in the country, 477 are found in Ladakh. The governing body also approved several steps to protect the environment and spread awareness. These include installing 300 colour coded waste bins in 40 villages and providing portable dustbins to help separate different types of waste. A plastic free tourism campaign will also be launched to reduce the use of plastic in Ladakh. The plan also includes setting up SHAN Wildlife Clubs in 50 government schools.

The government will also start an annual wildlife photography fellowship for 10 local young people. Other steps include putting up information signs in protected areas to prevent littering, illegal off roading and disturbance to animals. Fifty women artisans will be trained to make wildlife-themed souvenirs, such as small models of snow leopards and black-necked cranes. Wildlife souvenir shops will also be opened across Ladakh. Lastly, the Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena directed all concerned departments to complete the preparations before the snow leopard sighting season begins this winter.
