Gen Z is changing the way people travel. According to travel surveys by Airbnb and YouGov, young travelers now prefer taking many short trips instead of one big holiday every year. Around 70% of respondents said they would rather take three short trips than one long vacation. These quick getaways usually lasting 24 to 72 hours and are becoming more popular because Gen Z does not want to wait all year for a big trip. They enjoy flexible travel plans and prefer experiences that feel personal and meaningful to them. Gen Z travelers also avoid crowded tourist spots that become popular online. For them, the place they stay is not just a room it is an important part of the whole travel experience. Their travel choices are based not only on how often they travel, but also on the purpose and feeling behind each trip.
For Gen Z, travel is not just about the destination, it is more about the reason behind the trip. They first think about why they want to travel and then decide where to go. Airbnb calls this trend “why-cation.” It means choosing a trip based on a personal need, feeling or goal instead of simply visiting a famous place. Unlike older generations they are not focused only on visiting famous places or completing a list of must see attractions. Instead, they prefer exploring less crowded and lesser-known places. They do not want to follow trends just because something is popular online.
This style of travel is called the anti-itinerary trip. Gen Z travelers like trips that feel personal, flexible, and not overly planned. According to the survey 95% of Gen Z travelers want their trips to be unique and based on their own interests, while 90% prefer discovering new places, instead of following viral travel recommendations. Interestingly, many Gen Z travelers are also happy doing nothing during their trips. About two out of three travelers say they travel just to relax, take a break, and enjoy slow days without planning lots of activities. For nearly one-fourth of them this relaxed style is a part of every trip they take.
Another travel trend among Gen Z is discovering the local side of a place. Instead of only visiting famous tourist spots and popular landmarks they want to experience destinations like locals do. They enjoy exploring neighbourhood markets, local shops, grocery stores, and everyday places that are not usually found in travel guides. For Gen Z, the fun is in finding simple and authentic experiences rather than only seeing famous attractions. This trend is growing with 81% of Gen Z travelers saying they like exploring local markets, grocery stores, and regular neighbourhood areas when they travel. They are more interested in understanding the real lifestyle and culture of a place.
