Effect of Political and Diplomatic Issues on “Maldives Tourism”

According to the recent news article, Indian tourists were the highest among visitors to the Maldives till December 2023. However, there have been calls for a boycott of Maldives by major section of Indian citizens due to derogatory remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi by Maldives ministers and politicians. It is assumed that if Indian tourists boycott Maldives then it will have a huge impact on Maldives economy which is mainly driven by their tourism industry. It is important to note that the Maldives government has banned the “India Out” campaign, which was led by former president Abdulla Yameen, terming it a “threat to national security”.

Tours operators in India are gearing up for an impact of calls for a cancellation of holidays in the Maldives as they said there are no inquiries by people for the visit to the island nation. The Indian Association of Tour Operators predicts that the repercussions of recent events and the call for a boycott will become apparent within the next 20-25 days.

However, the operators deny reports of mass cancellations, stating “If a person has paid an advance for plane tickets and hotels, they will not cancel it”. Many Indians on social media have claimed that they have been cancelled their planned holidays to the island nation.

Moreover, the Maldives was quite popular among Indians but after some statement made in social media platform X based on the recent visit on Lakshadweep by Indian Prime Minister, conflict and political issue has been raised and now it is expecting a huge downfall in people choosing Maldives as a tourist destination.
