Himachal Pradesh is ready to open its high-altitude borderline areas for regulated tourism under a newly Border Tourism initiative, focused on promoting sustainable tourism in rural tribal zones along the Indo-China border.

This initiative was inaugurated by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu during his two-day visit to Kinnaur district, that started from the strategically situated Shipki-La village. The project has been developed in coordinated with the Union Government and is regarded as a significant advancement toward inclusive development in remote border regions.

Paths Opened to Strategic Areas in Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti
Under the new tourism policy, domestic and locals visitors will be authorized with regulated access to important locations in Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti districts, which were previously restricted for security reasons. The regions include Lepcha-La, Gue Monastery, Shipki-La, Khana, Dumti, Rani area of Sangla, and Chitkul, among others.

Access protocols have been reworked to facilitate easier access, enabling visitors to explore these sites by presenting valid identity documents. The security continued to be handled by the ITBP and Indian Army, who will ensure safe and smooth movement in accordance with national security protocols.

Emphasis on Responsible and Sustainable Tourism
The tourism intitiative aims to boost ecological tourism without compromising national security or cultural integrity of the tribal communities residing in the area, according to a government spokesperson.

"The long-established demand to open these areas to tourism has now begun yielding results," the spokesperson stated, adding the initiative reflects the State Government's commitment to inclusive growth and national integration.

Socio-Economic Development Expected in Remote Areas
Authorities hope that the opening of these borderline areas will lead to reinforced infrastructure, latest livelihood opportunities, and greater community involvement in tourism-based activities. The policy is also expected to highlight the rich tribal heritage, natural beauty, and strategic significance of these areas.
