The Pamban Bridge, India’s pioneering vertical-lift Sea Bridge, is nearing completion and is poised to become an engineering marvel. Here are some fascinating facts about this remarkable project:

1. Vertical Lift Capability: The new Pamban Bridge features a distinctive vertical lift capability. This innovative design allows boats to pass safely beneath the bridge. The vertical lift span integrates electromechanical controls with the train control system.

2. Electrification Readiness: In line with Indian Railways’ broader goal of transitioning to full electrification across its broad gauge network, the bridge has been constructed to accommodate future electrification.

3. Double Line Provision: The substructure of the new Pamban Bridge has been designed to accommodate double lines, enhancing its capacity for rail traffic. Even the navigational span includes provisions for double lines.

4. Cost and Construction: Constructed parallel to the old Pamban Bridge by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited, the new bridge has an estimated cost of INR 535 crore. It serves as a vital link between Rameswaram on Pamban Island and Mandapam on the mainland. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for this project in November 2019.

5. Completion Timeline: Construction began in February 2020, with an initial completion target of December 2021. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the timeline was extended. The bridge is now expected to be the operational by February 2024.

The new Pamban Bridge represents a transformative moment in India’s infrastructure landscape, replacing the iconic Pamban Bridge, which was inaugurated in 1914 as India’s first-ever sea bridge. Soon, this modern marvel will redefine connectivity and maritime navigation in this region.
