The Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary in Ubud, Gianyar, Bali, is a 12.5 hectare jungle reserve and spiritual center. It is home to over 1,200 Balinese long-tailed macaques and three sacred temples. It opens daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon when temperatures are cooler and monkeys are most active. Some of the trees of this forest are often considered holy and are used in various Balinese spiritual practices. For example; Majegan, which is used exclusively for the building of shrines or the Berigin, whose leaves are used in cremation ceremonies. The forest embodies Tri Hita Karana, balancing harmony between people, nature, and spirits. The sanctuary is a nature reserve and temple complex and it is designed for slow wandering rather than rushing. Here, visitors will cross carved bridges, pass weathered carvings and moss covered statues, and pause in shaded clearings where a monkey may be grooming. Visitors can also wander along shaded pathways surrounded by towering banyan trees and sacred shrines. They can also observe the playful Balinese monkey in their natural habitat. For more spiritual experience visitors can visit the ancient 14th century Pura Dalem Agung temple at the forest's heart.

Things Visitors Must Remember During The Visit To The Sacred Monkey Forest, Ubud

Do not make direct eye contact with monkeys, as they can interpret it as a challenge.
Keep bags and your belongings closed and avoid wearing shiny jewelry that might attract curiosity.
No food or drink.
Do not touch or feed monkey.
