Because of this, it has many kinds of fish and sea creatures. To go to Sipadan, travellers first fly to Tawau, then travel to Semporna. From there, one take a boat to stay on nearby islands like Mabul or Kapalai, because people are not allowed to stay on Sipadan itself. This rule was made by the Malaysian government to protect the island. Diving in Sipadan is limited. Only about 120 divers are allowed each day, so the reef stays safe. When visitors dive there, they often see many turtles, sometimes more than 10 in one dive, and also reef sharks. The water is warm, around 28–29°C. The water is also very clear, and one can usually see 20 to 30 meters ahead. One famous dive spot is Barracuda Point, where visitors can see large groups of barracuda swimming together.

Pulau Mabul, Sabah : Pulau Mabul is a small island off the southeast coast of Sabah, Malaysia. It is a famous diving destination, known for muck diving and colorful coral reefs. The island is about a 30-minute boat ride from Semporna and is one of the main gateways to Sipadan. In Pulau Mabul island, visitors can dive around beautiful reef slops and see turtles, blue-spotted stingrays, and more. However, what really makes Mabul special is the small marine life. Although some dive guides say the reefs have only three types of coral; soft coral, hard coral, and dead coral. The reef here is actually very healthy compared to other sites along the east coast. Famous dive spots like Tokong Timur are popular in Tenggol Island not only for their beautiful coral but also for regular whale shark sightings. Pulau Tenggol is also great for macro photography, offering a peaceful experience, with clear turquoise waters and vibrant coral reefs, making it perfect for diving and exploring.

Pulau Perhentians, Terengganu : The Perhentian Islands in Terengganu is about six-hour drive from Kuala Lumpur. Travellers can also fly to Kota Bharu, then take a taxi to Kuala Besut, which is the main starting point to reach the islands. Scuba diving here is easy and not very deep. There are several wreck sites like Polis Wreck, Sugar Wreck, and Fisherman’s Wreck that are simple to explore. There is also a sea mount at about 25-minute boat ride away, which is full of marine life, that almost feels like swimming in an aquarium. The best time to visit Perhentian island is from March to October. Pulau Perhentian is more popular and has lively places like Long Beach. Pulau Perhentian Besar is quieter and better for families or those who want to relax. Visitors can see sea turtles especially from June to September when they nest, black-tip reef sharks, monitor lizards, and different kinds of birds.

Pulau Redang, Terengganu : Pulau Redang is the biggest island in the Terengganu group of islands in Malaysia. The best time to go scuba diving here is from March to October because the sea is calm. Visitors can see up to 30 meters underwater and spot turtles, reef sharks, and big groups of fish like barracudas. There are many types of dive spots in Redang island such as small shipwrecks, areas with tiny sea creatures like macro, and even drift dives. Near the beaches in front of Sari Pacifica and Laguna resorts, there is a small snorkeling area where visitors can witness baby reef sharks and lots of fish. Redang has a rich variety of marine life and many diving options for all skill levels, which makes it a popular and busy destination. The northern part of the island has healthier coral reefs and lots of fish, along with interesting underwater landscapes. The southern part of Redang island has more “muck” diving spots and stronger currents, making it a better options for experienced divers.

Langkawi Island : Langkawi is on Malaysia’s west coast, it doesn’t really have its own dive sites, but it’s a good place to stay if visitors want to visit nearby Pulau Payar Marine Park. Many dive shops on the island offer day trips about 30 km away to some of the best diving spots on the west coast. The diving here isn’t as impressive as the east coast islands, but it’s still worth it, especially during the monsoon when the east coast is hard to access. The reefs are shallow, with lots of soft corals, calm water, and plenty of marine life. visitors can see common Southeast Asian reef fish, and there’s also a good chance of spotting bigger fish like jack and barracuda. In the shallow areas, visitors might even see young blacktip reef sharks.
