Recently India’s passport has ascended to the 75th position in the latest Henley Passport Index, upgrading from 85th last year. This rise means Indian Passport holder can travel upto 56 countries without minimal visa requirement, it will be either visa-free or getting a visa on arrival. India’s ranking had fallen in recent years, it was 80th in 2024 and then dropped to 85th. The recent rise to 75th is good news, but India hasn’t reached its best rank yet, which was 71st back in 2006. An Indian citizen still believes that the best ever ranking was back in 2006. For many Indians, a higher ranking means less paperwork, quicker processing, and easier travel plans. Passport holders can travel business cities, and cultural destination across Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, and Oceania more easily, this shows that travel rules are gradually becoming more relaxed.

The Henley Passport Index ranks passports around the world based on travel data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), measuring how many destinations their holders can visit without needing a visa beforehand. India moving up to 75th position where it shares its ranks with other countries like Gabon, Madagascar, Cte d'ivoire and Mauritania, this can be a sign that things are starting to improve now for Indian passport holder.

At the top of the index, Singapore still holds the first position. Singapore passport offers visa-free access to 192 countries. Japan and South Korea share the second spot, with access to 187 countries each. While Sweden and the UAE ranked third, allowing entry to 186 countries individualy.

India’s passport is much more stronger compared to its neighbour countries like Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Afghanistan. In the ranking, Bhutan stands at 83rd position, Sri Lanka at 91st, Bangladesh at 93rd, Nepal at 95th, Pakistan at 97th, and Afghanistan is last at 101st position.
