West Bengal has become the state with the greatest number of certified tourist guides in the nation, tourism minister Indranil Sen declared in the state assembly in June.
Emphasizing the success of the government's initiatives to professionalize the tourism industry, Sen said, "West Bengal boasts the highest number of certified tourist guides among all states in the nation." He informed the house that a total of 1,022 tourist guides had been certified under the state's tourist guide certification scheme launched by the tourism department.
Sen discussed, how the government has been working to revitalise tourism in Purulia, a district formerly affected by Maoist activity but is now getting attention for its natural attractions and enhanced sense of security. "Many tourists are now visiting the lush green forests and hills in this western district," Sen claimed.
He attributed the surge in tourism to strategic infrastructural support by the state to private players who are ready to invest in hospitality and tourism-related industries. "The state government is giving proper infrastructural support to private companies to set up tourism properties," he said.
To ensure coordinated development in the district, the government has established the Purulia Tourism Development Council. The council is tasked with helping stakeholders and promoting the district as a potential holiday spot, according to the minister. "Those tourists who look for forests and hills in north Bengal are now considering Purulia where peace and security have been re-established," Sen emphasized.
The state push towards inclusive tourism growth is being viewed as one of the major strategies to unlock the potential of lesser-known destinations and offer varied experiences beyond the traditional hotspots of north Bengal and Sundarbans.
