A remote destination in Arunachal Pradesh in India comprising of scenic environment and congenial weather – Bomdila is settled at an altitude up to 7300 ft. above the sea level and is one of the most attractive destination of Arunachal Pradesh. The ultimate tourist attraction spot along with Sela Pass and Tawang, Bomdila Pass offers great views of Kangto and Gorichen Peaks which are the highest peaks in the state. You’ll also see great views just driving further north from Bomdila to Tawang. Another major spot not to be missed is the Bomdila Monastery (GRL Monastery - Gontse Gaden Rabgyel Lling monastery), especially for Buddhists. The town is home to three monasteries: Upper Gompa, Middle Gompa and Lower Gompa with all offering great tourist exploration sites.
Located 20km away via a detour from the main Bhalukpong - Bomdila Road, Rupa lies on the banks of the Tenga River and is dominated by army barracks. Originally named Tukpan, the scenic town of Rupa is located at an altitude of 1,407m and is surrounded by mountains. The centuries-old gompa (Buddhist Monastery) here is a colourful wooden structure, typical of Tibetan Buddhist architecture. Chillipam Monastery in Bomdila enjoys a spectacular location, overlooking the mountains, and offers a bird’s-eye view of Rupa in Arunachal Pradesh. Other notable spots include Dirang which is halfway between Bomdila and Tawang and is a perfect one night stop-over for tourists.
Although Tezpur (155 Kms) is closer to Bomdila but Guwahati (290km) is better connected with daily flights from major cities of the country. The nearest railway network is also Guwahati with numerous trains available daily from all parts of India. While Road from Guwahati is beautiful passing along NH31 to Baihata Charial and then NH52 (Bomdila via Balipara), Mangaldai and Tezpur. From Bhalukpong, the NH229 is a mountain road to Bomdila (110km). Reserved Taxis and cabs are the best option from Tezpur, however buses also ply along the same route but they are not comfortable option for the tourists.
