Gnathang

If you really want to cherish the real essence of paradise in Earth, Nathang Valley (also known as Gnathang valley) located at an altitude of 13,500 feet above sea level and surrounded by snow-capped hills and mountain landscape on all sides is the place you should not afford to miss. Nathang Valley popularly called the “Ladakh of the East India” offers majestic view of the Eastern Himalaya during sunrise. Gnathang is located in the Eastern Indian state of Sikkim. Just before the onset of winters, Nathang valley witnesses plenty of migratory birds. A perfect hub for both nature and bird lovers, a trip with family and even for a couple can be exotic. You can get the best sunrise viewpoints like Lungthung and Eagle’s Nest Bunker, which are just few minutes away from Nathang. You can get a 360 degree view of the whole range of Mt. Kanchenjungha, West Bhutan, plains of Bengal, China from the Eagle Nest Bunker. Only 25 km away from Nathang Valley there are several beautiful lakes like Kupup Lake, Changu Lake and Menmecho Lake which can be spotted by nature lovers. A small Buddhist Monastery, stretches of grasslands, makeshift bridges built on the stream and a Hindu Temple are some popular tourist attraction. According to seasons the valley changes its colour, in autumn when the grass dries up it turns golden, in monsoon it is covered with flowers, during winters it is buried in snow. 

Accommodation in Nathang valley are generally of two types Traditional and modern homestays. Both are nicely built, well equipped with basic amenities like hot meals (home-made), hot water, comfy beds, room heaters, attached western bathrooms, 24-hr electricity and endless supplies of blankets providing a comfortable stay for tourists. The distance from Gangtok to Nathang is around 60kms, so ideally you would schedule your itinerary with a combine trip of Sikkim. While staying at Nathang, for more sightseeing you can also cover Padamchen, Genmochen, Thambi View Point, Kupup Lake, Tukla Valley, Baba Mandir and all other spots in the Silk Route circuit.

Although it is always suggested to visit Silk Route, you should go for a complete package with homestay and vehicle altogether. The region fall under restricted area and needs special permits.  Throughout the year, Nathang Valley looks beautiful with diverse climatic conditions, you can visit the place from March to June when the valley is veiled behind wild flowers, also incurring relatively moderate expenses. September to November would give you an ideal opportunity to enjoy best of the place with just onset of winters and January to April offers plenty of snowfall, if you prefer the chill and cold. In high winter season roads normally remains blocked due to heavy snowfall.
