Mirik

If you are planning to arrange a vacation in the serene hills of Darjeeling, probably it is a great idea to spend a day in Mirik, a splendid destination for honeymooners and laid-back travellers. The biggest advantage of the attractive tourist spot is the location which is almost halfway between Siliguri/NJP and Darjeeling, either way it makes sense to break the onward journey towards Darjeeling and make it much more relaxing and enjoyable holiday trip to this immensely beautiful yet low-profile hill station. The distance between Siliguri to Mirik is just 57kms. The place is within Darjeeling district and lately it is declared a sub-division.

Mirik’s mild and comfortable temperature is another great incentive to visit the place, unlike other adjacent hill towns it doesn’t experience extreme cold, as its altitude is much lower compared to other areas. You are sure to find many lovely tea gardens on the mountain slopes, beautiful orange orchards along the way and of course the love scenery in and around Mirik. 

There are multiple reasons to visit Mirik. The central attraction of the place is the 1.25 kms long picturesque Sumendu lake which is skirted by a garden and pine trees on two sides with a curved foot-bridge. The elegant lake also offers boating facilities in quaint shikaras and some exotic views of the Mt. Kanchenjunga. There are numerous allied sightseeing points to watch out for like sunrise, sunset and the landscape, several nearby tea gardens, monasteries & temples, orange orchards, flower gardens including orchids and more. Some popular activities at the lake area include boating, horse riding, fish feeding etc.

Arguably the most preferred time to visit Mirik is between Mid March to June and Mid September to December.  The month of March marks the start of the holiday season with most tourists flock in huge numbers. Temperature ranges between a comfortable 10°C to 20°C during these months.  The temperature is just apt for sightseeing and enjoying the natural scenic beauty. However, the start of the winters in the month of December can also be a very good alternative option.
