Perched amongst the foothills of mighty Himalayas, Kalimpong is situated in the northern part of West Bengal in India. A calm hill town located at an altitude of 1250 m above sea level, adjacent to the state of Sikkim which is around 45 kms and distance from the famous tourist town of Darjeeling is around 60 kms, making it a favourite tourist destination in Eastern Himalaya. The most striking feature of the destination is the peaceful ambience culminated by the presence of Buddhist monasteries, temples and churches across the town, just the way a visitor or tourist would prefer. The place is also famous for its orchids and nurseries as well as cacti plantations, which are exported to many parts of the world. Kalimpong is also popular for traditional handicrafts easily available in Kalimpong market at bargain price. Lately Kalimpong has been declared as a separate district and now the town is a district headquarter.
Neora Valley National Park is a famous destination for animal lovers and is home to tigers and many wild endangered species, considered one of the richest biological zones in the entire Eastern India. Neora Valley is in Kalimpong district. Kalimpong town offers a wonderful panaromic view of the Mt. Kanchenjunga, and other Himalayan snow capped peaks, sweeping landscapes and lush greenery. Throughout the year tourists can experience a mild and pleasant weather. However the most appropriate time to visit would be from March to June or October to December, relishing the scenic beauty and tranquility of the place. The prices are bound to shoot up during the season time. Meanwhile during the winters the hill station is often wrapped up by fog and mist, but can be explored by tourists intend to experience the chill and cold.
Kalimpong is an excellent starting point to schedule your holiday itinerary in North Bengal along with Darjeeling, Kurseong, Mirik and Gangtok. Dello Hill, the highest point of Kalimpong, Mangal Dham, Durpin Dara Hill , Samthar Plateau, Relli River, Samco Ropeway (It is completely shut down), Nature Interpretation Centre are some of the top tourist attractions of Kalimpong. Army Golf Couse and Deolo is also popular in Kalimpong for tourist activities. Teesta Bazaar is an important place for white water rafting, located around 16km from Kalimpong, an ideal place for adventure lovers. The ideal season for rafting season between mid-November to mid-February, although rafting is irregular in Teesta due to the dams on the river. Another important place to explore is the small village of Lava, located at 2,353 m above sea level and about 32 km east of Kalimpong. Tourists can also make a day’s trip to notable spots like Lava, Loleygaon, Rishyap, Pedong and Rikkisum which are well connected by road.
The travel time from Kalimpong to Siliguri is around 2.5 hours (70 kms), whereas from the nearest railway station i.e. New Jalpaiguri Railway Station and nearest Airport i.e. Bagdogra it takes between 2.5 to 3 hours by road via Teesta. Kalimpong also offers a wide range of accommodations varying from budget hotels, home stays, guesthouses and luxury and premium hotels.
By Air - The nearest airport is in Bagdogra which is 80 kilometers away from Kalimpong. Flight for Kolkata, Delhi, Guwahati, Patna are available from this airport.
By Rail - two closest major railway stations are Siliguri Junction (72 kilometers) and New Jalpaiguri (78 kilometers). These railway stations have direct connectivity to and from Kolkata, Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai, Bangalore, Guwahati etc.
By Road - Frequent bus and taxi service is available to and from Siliguri, Gangtok, Darjeeling, Lava, Loleygaon, Rishyap etc. from Kalimpong bus stand.
