There are designated Taxi and Bus Stands providing easy travel for the tourists. You can either opt for private or shared taxi as per your convenience. Sikkim National Transport Bus Service is also available daily from Siliguri and helicopter service from Bagdogra airport to Gangtok. The easiest way to reach Gangtok is to board a bus or hire a taxi from NJP (the nearest major railway station) or from Bagdogra airport (takes around 4.5 hours from both). The distance from Siliguri is approximately 125 kms.

A tourist can expect fascinating views across the place and its adjacent areas which also comprises of some of the most mesmerising vantage points like monasteries, museums, sanctuaries, handicraft centres, parks & gardens, zoo etc. You can also enjoy activities such as rides on cable car (ropeway) and paragliding. Hanuman Tok, Ganesh Tok, Do Drul Chorten Rumtek Monastery, Ban Jhakri falls, Tashi viewpoint and Namgyal Research Institute of Tibetology are some of prominent tourist spots of Gangtok. Another set of popular day excursion from Gangtok is to explore Tsomgo Lake, Baba Mandir and Nathu La pass to China.  Other places to explore within the state of Sikkim are Pelling, Lachung, Yumthang & Zero Point, Lachen & Gurudongmar Lake. The accommodation options for the travellers to explore at Gangtok are plenty from modern luxury hotels to budget stays. You can either opt to stay at the town center (i.e. on or near MG Marg, the main part of the town) or a bit away from the crowd in a location that fills your heart with spectacular views of the mountains. The best time to visit Gangtok would be either in the summer (March – June) or during autumn (October – December) as the weather is pleasant and comfortable unlike winters or monsoon which are often extreme. The cost is going to be on the higher side in summer and autumn because these are classified as tourist season. By Air – The closest air port is at Bagdogra, which is 125 kilometers from Gangtok and connected with all important Indian metros with regular flights from Kolkata, Guwahati, Delhi, etc. Helicopter / Chopper services to Gangtok from Siliguri and back  is regular service. Mountain flights and other such tours to North Sikkim are also conducted.

By Rail – The nearest railhead is at New Jalpaiguri which is 130 kilometers from Gangtok. NJP is well connected with all major cities in India. At Gangtok, railway bookings can be made at the booking counter of the Sikkim Nationalized Transport Terminus.

By Road – Gangtok is connected with Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Siliguri by the national highway 31A. The Sikkim Nationalised Transport plies regular bus services between Gangtok and Siliguri, Darjeeling and within Sikkim. Private buses, taxis and jeeps are also available from Siliguri & Bagdogra. Gangtok is at a distance of 130 kilometers from Siliguri and will take 4 hours from Siliguri to reach Gangtok. Gangtok is connected by road with Darjeeling 125 kilometers (4 hours), Kalimpong 75 kilometers, Nepal 155 kilometers (4 hours) and with Bhutan, Phuntsholing 220 kilometers (6 hours).
