A stay of 1 or 2 nights at Lachung is ideal for holidaymakers as more nearby mesmerising tourist spot like Yumthang valley is just about 25kms from Lachung located at an altitude of 11,800ft and takes about 1.5 hours of drive. Both Lachung and Yumthang are the most favourite and famous tourist destination in the entire of Sikkim and often compared to the beautiful valleys of Switzerland. A one night halt in Gangtok is desirable before moving towards Lachung as one need to obtain special permits to visit Lachung in North Sikkim. All the three spots Gangtok, Lachung and Yumthang are merged for scheduling a holiday itinerary. On your way to Lachung, you would also cross the town of Chungthang which is about 22kms away from Lachung, home to the Chungthang Monastery and has rich collection of rare Buddhist paintings. Yumesamdong or popularly known as Zero Point is a few kilometres ahead of Yumthang Valley and known for abundance of snow filled valley.

Lachung Monsatery (or gompa) is one of the finest places to visit and has wonderful wall paintings and several ancient statues. You should also visit the Carpet Weaving Center where you can see the local ladies weaving exquisite woolen carpets. The center is open on weekdays between 8am to 4pm.

Although winters experience extreme climatic conditions but March to June is the preferred time to visit and enjoy the beauty of Lachung. Huge rush of tourists are witnessed during this period across the region. To Reach

The word Lachung means a “small pass” located at an altitude of 8,610ft and located about 118kms from Gangtok. It takes around 6 hours to reach Lachung from Gangtok (capital of Sikkim). Reserved cabs are available to travel towards the destination. The nearest railway station is NJP and Airport is Bagdogra both around 4 hours distance from Gangtok.
