Sittong, popularly known as the “Orange Village” lies beside Riyang river in the Kurseong division of Darjeeling district. A relatively unexplored tourist destination surrounded with waterfalls, beautiful lakes and echoing green. Sittong is an undiscovered treasure, yet to be touched by the holidaymakers. During winters the entire village turns yellow because of huge blossoming of oranges. The beauty and simplicity of Sittong is matched by a bamboo bridge, a church, some winding village paths skirting through orange orchards and few meandering streams and a rivulet.
Sightseeing include a 100-year old Bamboo church, a Bamboo Bridge, enjoy the delicious oranges, visit the Rabindranath Tagore Museum at Mongpoo just 8 kms away and Latpanchar – the highest point in Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary also 13 km from Sittong. You can reach Sittong via Latpanchar and Ghaletar, popular tourist spots.
Tourists can indulge in multiple activities like forest & nature trek (Sittong – Shelpu – Latpanchar – Mungpoo), birding hotspot (Rufus necked hornbill) and butterfly watching, village excursions, and the most enthralling view of the sunrise and sunset along the Himalayan range and picturesque Mt. Khanchendjunga. The destination offers one of the very few refreshing and rejuvenating offbeat and leisure stay, a person can dream off. An ideal destination for nature and adventure enthusiast, who want to remain secluded from their busy life for few days. Home stay options are available in Sittong catering to varied budget accommodations. The ideal time to visit would be from October to January, with oranges everywhere and the setting of the winters. Summers are also good at Sittong.
Bagdogra (the nearest Airport) just 68 km and New Jalpaiguri (nearest Railway Junction)is 57 km well connected with all major destinations in India. Multiple road routes are available via NH 31A after crossing Sevoke on the way to Gangtok. From Kalijhora or from Mongpoo bazaar (55 km from Siliguri) take left turn towards Labda and next 30 minutes after crossing Riyang river. Transportation either in the form of private cars is available from nearby location of Siliguri/NJP/Bagdogra Airport, prior booking is the best option.
