Siliguri

Siliguri, a relatively small sub-divisional town also known as the gateway of North East India is situated in the plains of Darjeeling district by the side of River Mahananda. The travellers to the North East including the hills of Darjeeling and the adjacent state of Sikkim have to pass through Siliguri to reach their respective destinations either by rail, air or road. Siliguri is strategically placed for tourist to base and schedule their holiday destination accordingly. It is also recognized as the second biggest city of the state of West Bengal and the commercial capital of North Bengal.

The communication and transportation network provided by Siliguri is the most pivotal aspect of the city ensuring a easy and convenient travel towards the wonderful himalayan destinations like Gangtok, Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Kurseong, Thimpu, Paro, Kathmandu, etc. The Bagdogra Airport is just 14km from the heart of Siliguri and has links with most major Indian cities - Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Guwahati. Regular private and government bus service is available to the adjacent states of Guwahati, Nepal, Bhutan and Sikkim. North-Eastern India is well connected with Siliguri by the National Highway 31 & 55. New Jalpaiguri Railway Station is the biggest railway station of the region, connecting to towns in Northern, Eastern, and North Eastern India, such as New Delhi, Kolkata and Guwahati. Tourist from any part of the country can reach the place by boarding a train to NJP and subsequently make the journey to their respective holiday destinations. Even shared taxis and rented cars, jeeps and cabs to different odd locations of the Himalayas are available from Siliguri or New Jalpaiguri  to make an onward journey towards the hills or forests and adjacent tourist spots.

Throughout the year the temperature are more or less moderate with summers being quite hot, but tourists can make itinerary accordingly depending on the holiday destinations they are selecting for vacation. However, the best time to visit Siliguri is from March to June or October to December. Luxury and Budget Hotels including wide variety of resorts are available in the city for tourists of varied kinds. During the peak season the tariff rates are comparatively higher because of the huge tourist inflow.
