Engulfed with snow almost throughout the year, Thangu Valley is the most tranquil and scenic places you would find in entire of Sikkim. Located at an altitude of 13000 feet, Thangu is about 30 kilometers north of Lachen. Thangu has emerged as an attractive tourist destination with alpine flowers that are edged by shimmering water of River Teesta and wooden houses, offering a picturesque sight to witness. Three more rivers, Chopta, Thangu and Lassur also flow through this valley, apart from Teesta river which itself is quite captivating. The land is shrouded with the white blanket of snow from the month of October to March which makes it the ideal season to visit the place and experience the natural beauty bestowed from the hand of God. Heavy rush of travellers are witnessed during these months, with February to mid May being the prime season making it significantly expensive travel itinerary. May onwards the expenses are lower to moderate for budgeted holiday makers.
The small picturesque hamlet serves as a halt by tourists heading to the beautiful and popular attraction of Sikkim, Gurudongmar Lake. Gurudongmar lake is also the second highest lake in India. Highest lake is India also lies inly 5 Kms ahead of lake Gurudongmar, the name of the lake is Tso Lhamu Lake (Tourists are not permitted there). Thangu is place for trekkers too with places like Chopta Valley, Green Lake or Muguthang from Thangu to schedule short treks. Thangu provides basic accommodation facilities. Since the distance from Lachen to Thangu is about 27kms most of the tourists stay overnight at Lachen (about 6 to 7 hours drive from Gangtok) and visit Thangu on their way to the more famous Gurudongmar Lake visit. However it takes more than two hours to cover this distance (Lachen to Thangu) due to the high inclination of the road.
